What a day looks like

Breakfast at the camp, four to six hours riding with a long break for lunch, then the next camp by late afternoon. Evenings are quiet and the food is cooked where you sleep.

Day by day

  1. Day 1 — Kyzart to Kilemche Valley

    Meet in Kyzart village between 12 and 1, and have lunch at a local house with your guide. A short riding demo, then about four hours to Kilemche Valley with a break on the way. Tea when you arrive, the sunset if you want it, and your first night in a yurt at 2,500 m.

  2. Day 2 — Kilemche Valley to Song-Kol Lake

    Breakfast around half nine, then up over the Tuz-Ashuu Pass at 3,400 m — about two hours, with a stop at the top for the view across the range. Another two hours down to the yurt camp on the northern shore of Song-Kol, at 3,016 m. Lunch at the camp, and the afternoon is yours: walk the shore, or do nothing at all.

  3. Day 3 — Song-Kol Lake back to Kyzart

    Breakfast around nine, then back to Kyzart over the Kara-Kiya Pass at 3,340 m, with a break halfway. Lunch at a local house when you arrive.
